About Carbon Simple
Carbon Simple is a personal carbon footprint guide built on data, not guilt. We believe the best climate action starts with understanding — knowing your actual numbers and which actions genuinely move the needle.
Our Approach
We focus on three principles:
- Data first. Every claim is backed by peer-reviewed research or official data sources. We cite our sources.
- Impact-ranked. We rank actions by actual CO₂ reduction, not by how "green" they feel.
- Practical. We provide guides for real lifestyles — apartment dwellers, families, students, remote workers.
Data Sources
Our calculations and recommendations are based on:
- IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6, 2021-2022) — The gold standard for climate science.
- DEFRA (UK) Emission Factors (2024) — Detailed emission factors for specific activities.
- Poore & Nemecek (2018), Science — The most comprehensive study on food system emissions.
- Our World in Data — Open-access data on global carbon emissions.
- IEA (International Energy Agency) — Energy and transport emission data.
Methodology
Our calculator uses simplified emission factors that represent global or regional averages. Actual emissions vary based on your specific location, energy grid, lifestyle, and many other factors. The calculator provides an estimate to help you understand your relative impact across categories — not an exact measurement.
For precise carbon accounting, we recommend tools like the GHG Protocol or consultation with a certified carbon accountant.
